Ready, Mindset, Go!
It's not what you say to everyone else that determines your being, it is what you whisper to yourself. When was the last time you looked in the mirror and said something positive? What about when you last had a negative thought? I like to think of my mind as a colour projector with different thoughts popping up throughout the day. I can choose which ones to focus on and when to say "thank you, next." This got me thinking during a recent run: which songs have positive affirmations and how can I maximize my exercise time to strengthen my muscles and my mind?
I am currently following a 5K training plan. With this in mind, I want to run to songs that are going to steer me in the direction of speed. This is where BPM (beats per minute) comes in. The right playlist can have an immense impact on your pace, motivation and ability to fight fatigue. So how can you find out which songs best match your current fitness level?
Start a comfortable fifteen minute run, count how many steps you take in one minute
Repeat this two more times
This will give you an insight into what BPM suits your current running ability
Bearing all this in mind, I have compiled a list of my favorite medium to high-tempo songs featuring affirmations to enhance the mind-body connection during a run. My inner teacher also decided to color code them using the traffic light system and arrange them in ascending order.
Affirmations you will find in these songs:
I am brave I am bruised, I am who I'm meant to be, this is me.
I'm not scared to be seen, I make no apologies, this is me.
I feel like there's nothing I can't try and if you're with me put your hands high.
It's everything you ever need and it's here in front of you.
I'm gonna lift it, lift it higher.
Now look at me I'm sparkling, a firework, a dancing flame, you won't put me out again, I'm glowing.
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire, cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar.
My power's turned on, starting right now I'll be strong, I'll play my fight song.
No one told me what I could be, now I'm walking on air what a feeling, I'm undefeated.
No one can say what we get to be, so why don't we rewrite the stars?
Follow what you love and you will love what you do, never let the pressure tell you that you're not capable of being anything that you want.
The next time you take your body for a run, train your mind too. By reminding yourself daily of what you are worth you are encouraging the universe to get to work.
